Icon12 So you get $20,000

Because Ed Mcmahon knocks on your door one day.... he says the only catch is that you have to spend it all on a new reef tank. The price includes EVERYTHING including the live rock and live sand but no inhabitants other than that.....

What would you build?

Size?
Filtration?
Stand?
Sound proofing...
Back up filters?
Generators?
Tank theme?

What says you? What are the details of your dream tank?

Is this a hypothetical question, or did you magically wind up with 20 thousand that you dont know what to do with. I would definitely get a zero edge, because they are awesome. And then i would use some of the money to put an extension on the house and a fish room. That is all i got so far though.

Zero edge: Have you seen one of these up close or just the website (which they could do a better job with IMHO)....

I basically wanted to see what everyones dream tank would be and how they would build it.....

Guys I think you're missing the number $20,000. I believe you would have to spend all of it on a reef setup. I would go with a 1000-2000 gallon tank. I would also add a sump room to the side of the house but I would do it myself to keep the cost down. I would have a 125 for a QT tank. I think 100 gallon sump would be big enough. I would need to have the skimmer custom made. I don't know any companies off hand that make that big. I would need a 55 gallon refugium for growing macros and copepods to feed the army of tangs. Some diver tanks to swimm with the fishes and of course a some powerplant to furnish the power to run my 6000 watts of Mh's!!!!!

Thats a good start!!!!!!

Alright, I have reconsidered a few things and decided on a 200g long with an 8" DSB along with various plants. That would loop into a 100g frag tank, and that would loop into a 300g reef tank. Then that would loop into a 100g lionfish tank, and that would loop into a 50g sps tank.

The sump of this system would basically be one of those koi ponds that you can out in yourself. I would get one that is as large as would fit in the house.

As for equipment, I would not have a skimmer. But would ha a CA reactor....most likely multiple reactors.

I would do all the drilling and plumbing myself to save as much money as possible and I would try to get t-5's when water depth would allow.

The seagrass tank would have no LR, just loads and loads of plants which would act as a refugium ans a skimmer combined.

Elliot can loop as many tanks as he wants I have faith in him.
My husband has decided that we would buy a glass bottom boat, a cooler and then we would move to where it is warm.

If Ed knocked on my door with 20K I'd hand him my reef building receipts and wish list and tell him to come back with real money!!!

$2200 new 300 acrylic tank with custom coast to coast overflow
$3500 custom built stand and canopy
$1500 custom built 220 or so sump/fuge with stand and lights
$800 euro skimmer
$1400 1/2 hp chiller
$5000 2 48" solaris led lights
$500(?) calcium or kalk reactor
$500 plumbing (ball valves, true union valves, loc line...)
$3000 live rock (600 pounds at $5 per)
$600 live sand (600 pounds at .99)
$1200 ecotech vortech powerheads, battery backup
$1000 2 Iwaki pumps
$1000 heater, tests, additives, medications, etc...

so far $22,200 - not that I've spent that but I could do it no problem!!!!

Hey shouldn't this be in The Lobby??!!

Let me see 20,000 for a fish tank. 1) this would be the center of my whole house! a 3 story tank. The display would be on the top 2 floors and the sump and stuff would be on the bottom. The tank would a cylinder. 2) I would have custom light put in the floor btw them so that the coral could be every where i'm talking like 6000w of MH. 3) The basement would be mostly fish stuff! All tanks are connected. A 100 gallon for an octopus, a 300 gallon sump, 150 gallon frag tank, a 100 gallon QT, a 100 gallon in-wall reef for the non fish rooms, A huge custom skimmer, CA reactor, self automated water change and top off system. And all of Fiji’s live rock HAHA. if i missed any of the main things let me know!!

When i went to philadelphia there was a zero edge in one of the small towns outside of there in a fish store. It was around 8 feet long by 5 feet wide, a foot deep, and was holding maybe 400 coral frags that were for sale. There were also a couple of scopas tangs and a few wrasses in it, maybe just for effect. Needless to say it was AWESOME and i would get one in a heart beat. You can really touch it and water flows around your fingers. I am getting goosebumps just talking about it.

I was in Orlando on business and stopped in at a LFS whom accroding to the zero edge website is one of only two LFS who carry the tank. They had a very small reef set up.... it was a great look. I watched a turbo snail craw right over the top and start down the other side which was kind of funny.... it comes with a light bracket and filteration is built in.

I think this would be a great 2nd or 3rd tank...IMHO it wouldn't look that good as a big reef tank as I would want to be able to see more clearly.

I like the linked tanks idea....

On the 3 story aquarium... I said $20k not $2mill! LOL.......

I love the detail of the post below.... (and my best friend has the last name of Squires)....

Hey Zipperbaum don't forget the back-up generator in case the power goes out. One spends that much Cheddar on a fabulous tank one doesn't want anything to go wrong even when the power goes out.
