Default 1289.6 miles

So for the next 2 months I will be away from my normal life. I will be embarking on a journey of a lifetime. A journey where I will hopefully have a lot of fun and learn and experience many new things. I will be hiking a large section of the Appalachian Trail traveling 1289.6 miles from Springer Mt. GA to the Delaware water gap in PA. I will be gone from March 28, 2009 throuhg May 22, 2009. This is a trip of a lifetime and I wanted to share my experience with all of you here on RB. I have all the gear I need and have my trip planned out fairly well. I will have a camera to document different scenery and whatnot that I will encounter. When I get back from the trail, I will make a new thread with all of the pictures.

I will most definately run if I hear banjos playing haha.

so far, as of about 30 seconds ago, in Atlanta GA it will be 61 and sunny on day 1 of the trip. Every day I will call home and ask my parents to check out the weather for the next day so I can be as prepared as possible for whatever mother nature will throw at me.

Good to stay ahead of the game, especially when your taking a month away from society. Are your parents going to care for your tank while your gone? I'm always nervous when i'm away and my pops is taking care of them.. I stress to him all the time about feeding in small amounts until they stop eating.. Instead, he grabs a huge pinch and covers the tank in a cloud of food because he says I starve them and they look hungry all the time.. My response.. "They have no facial expressions dad, they are like a dog.. You feed them, then in 5 min they will eat again as if you haven't fed them yet!" Its a vicious cycle between us and this topic

I am way behind schedule haha. I am in Franklin NC today at a hotel to resupply and rest my knee. I have met lots of wonderful people. Yesterday I was gonna walk 4 miles in cold weather in this town to meet some hiker buddies at a pizza hut. The hotel clerk who is about my age gave me her car keys! I have had nothing but good happen to me since I embarked. I hope to make it to fontan dam NC in a few days, and will try to update you all when I get there.

Not as many squirrels as I thought, but did see a red squirrel a few days ago. Also, the other night right by one of the shelters I was in my tent and about 2-3am a pack of cayotes came rolling in and proceeded to howell for the next hour or so....that was just plain obnoxious. There were 2 guys about50 yards away and ended up getting scared and actually moved their tent closer to the shelter for safety lol.
