Default diying sponge

how would you tell if a sponge is diying? Mine is flared open but I dont remember what it looked like before when I first got it.

sponges kinda just melt/rot away, almost looks as if they are being eaten away...

if exposed to air, this speeds the death process up very much..

Ball and Tree sponges dont fair well at all in the home aquariums for some reason... The lil hitch hiker sponges seem to grow like wildfire though...
