Why would anyone want a mantis shrimp? I had a friend who lost 3 of her favorite fish (who were twice his size) due to this little guy who hitchiked in on a new piece of live rock. Had to set a trap to get rid of him. Just wondering?

I'm sure you've found a decent site to buy mantis shrimp from but I wanted to post a link that I found while looking for live rock.

http://www.tampabaysaltwater.com/ord...pricelist.html

I'm a little confused on the prices however. One says you can get one for 10 bucks and the other says they will deliver it to your door for $50.

Hope that helps if you havn't found one yet.

I had a mantis shrimp hitch in on a piece of live rock, too, and he wiped out all of my hermits and a couple of cleaner shrimp. He was also constantly hammering on a piece of live rock, making an annoying clicking noise. I read somewhere this burrowing through rock and hard surfaces is dangerous because they can crack through the glass of an aquarium (though I've read not all species do).

It took me a while to trap him. They are fast, smart, and reclusive (and UGLY, imho)!!! You might let the local fish stores know that you're interested, and when the odd customer calls to find out how to get rid of an unwanted one, you may be able to score it on the cheap.

Sounds like you will have many reefers racing to give them to you if you put the word out.

iv heard these little guys are nasty, wiping out whole tanks, breaking glass, iv heard theyre punch is as fast as a 22. bullet. Itd be quite a tragity to find your tank with a crack in the glass:O

I specifically bought a Mantis for my 12 gal nano. He is a lot of fun to watch and keep. I have all types of corals in there with him and he doesnt touch em. Every now and then I throw a chromis or damsel in there for him to kill and eat. It's really cool to watch. He hasn't touched any of my snails/crabs yet....I can understand if one hitches a ride into your tank and starts kiling stuff off, but they really are cool creatures. Really smart too.

not all mantis can break glass. only the peacock mantis shrimp can. I have had over 9 different mantis shrimp. I hand feed two of them. mine live with fish and coral ,other shrimp and snails. I never feed him live food. always scallops or krill. They do not go after fish. smashers kill snails and crabs in the wild. spearers will go after a fish. but you would never get a spearer in on live rock. they live deep in the sand bed. to keep a spearer you need a 9-12 inch sand bed . they are not all bad. I love them to death. they have the best personalities.

Ryan G. Dr. Foster and Smith have mantis shrimp in their Collector's Corner and occasionally in their Diver's Den section. Their collector's corner section often has the best mantis, but it's not WYSIWYG like the Diver's Den.

my friend has a msntis, and it is actually really cool. he feeds it damsels and mithrix crabs, snails and hermits. the mantis will walk over to the mithrix and punch like 6 holes in its back before its dead. same thing with the snails and hermits.

I've seen a lot of programs on TV about mantis shrimp and I'd really like to get one, but before I pick out one- help me choose the kind.

I have a 72 gal. Reef (mix) - the fish are listed in my sig.

I don't want the shrimp to crack my glass, have to burry itself in the tank sand (I only have about 2 to 3 inches in any give spot in the tank), or kill the fish or other creatures I might add to the tank...

So? Which type is good for me?

With all that said-

Does anyone know a good spot to buy a mantis shrimp online?

Any help would be appreciated...
