they tell you that to cover their a--es.if you drop your lights in the tank they can say they told you so.i have my 48 in. extreme pro sitting directly on top of the tank,no docking mounts, the mounts would prevent me from using my canopy.i have had NO problems with this set up.

Congrats on your new lights! I have a timer for each switch and I have mine set for the blues to go on an hour before the daylights and they go off an hour after the daylights go off.

The lights seems a little low for clams. A lot would depend on the height of the tank, placement of the clams, etc. Clams are a tough cookie to keep also. They need pristine water quality and stable Calcium, Ph, and Alk levels. The open top is most desirable in your situation. If you have a glass pane over the tank you will loose some light penetration due to the glass. You could build a hood for the tank and retro the fixture into it if you are really concerned about things getting into the open top.

I always have had an open top on my tank you should be fine also I dont have a canopy I like the open feel. so your going to overdrive the bulbs hey. Then I might say ya to a clam but until then..I would back away from the clams for now. And if you did get a clam start small and put him high in the tank...

I know alot of people that overdrive there 48" T5 bulbs with an icecap 660 thus putting out alot more power per bulb. Correct it is a bigger ballast. But to retro fit them into a light I am not sure.

wait does the nova already come with one built in it ?? and if so is it ok to just conncect it to another one so i dont have to take it apart to take the one inside out if it has one ?? and No i would not be putting it inside the fixture. and its not noisy right ?
