Default My 29BC Setup

HEY ALL....I am back....its been a while. Just wanted to show you all my new setup. I got rid of the old rock and crushed coral and replaced them with some fiji rock and sand. Tell me what you think.

It's been a long road, but I think I finally got it. I just need some coraline to start growing. THEN..I'll be happy!!!

Thanks everyone. I am still running with the same stock lighting, would like to upgrade in the future. I upgraded the stock pump and went with a maxijet 1200. I removed all the bio balls, replaced with live rock, covered it in chaeto, scraped off the black paint on the back and attached 2 flourescent lights and turned it into a sump. I've got the heater tucked into the intake chamber, and I put 2 media bags in the return chamber of carbon and ammonia remover. I've got 2 Koralia 1's in the tank and I took the return nozzle off and put one of those self rotating hydor nozzles on it. Oh, the tank has technically been up and running since Feb 2007, but 2 weeks ago I took it down and replaced the live rock with new fiji rock and the crushed coral with live sand.

You asked about the maroon clown, he is an abomination!! My plan was to trade him in when I broke the tank down but I threw him back in (STUPID), he is very very aggressive and too large for my cube. I actually tried to catch him earlier but he's too quick and he hides in the rock when he sees the net. He constantly chases the fish away from his anenome, if you add a new coral in the tank, he'll go over to it and knock it over if the epoxy hasn't had time to dry yet. He, along with my draon goby are on my "hitlist". The dragon goby keeps sifting sand all over my corals..driving me crazy!!! I am trying to catch them both for either a sale or a trade in.

Thanks for the props.

Steve

I think its called a Hydor-flo wavemaker. Its just a bullet shaped piece of plastic with some plastic gears inside and a propellor that you push onto your return nozzle into your tank...the force of the water hits the propellor, it turns the gears and spins the head, it doesnt spin rapidly, it just moves at a slow revolution, shoots a current in a circular direction. I think they cost like $15 at any LFS. It's nice that it doesnt shoot a hard current in 1 single direction at your corals. I just wanted something different and I saw this 14gallon BC at a LFS near my work, it had one in it and the tank just looked so "together". I figured, why not.

The nozzles cut flow in half and in my tank work for 3 weeks before starting to strip the little gears that drives the thing. A tank not needing much Ca I would say they might work. For your tank william witha Ca reactor forget it. Ive had at least 5 of these.

OH! Fishead! Nice looking tank. Looks like you put that prize money to good use!

Whats your stock list for fish in that thing. I think I see quite a few! hahahaha

I use a hydor in my 14g biocube and I love it. It does considerably cut your flow but you can compensate with a better powerhead. Had mine for like 5 months or so and still turning strong.

Anyone runninga Ca reactor knows what it is to keep pumps going. Those little hydor spinning things are all plastic and when the coraline starts gathering on those little gears its only a short matter of time till the gogs on the gears wont catch anymore. The Coraline wheres them down like its sandpaper.

Good for a tank not needing a lot of Ca and good for smaller tanks that dont need flow rates from a PH pushing more than a few hundred gph. They work great in my daughters cube. IMO

I forgot to include the six-line wrasse in the fish list.

The flame scallop is doing great...he's the one that retreated to the rear of my last setup and was never seen again, now he has no where to go so he has to stay out in the open... I also have a small electric flame scallop in there as well, I thought it was dead too for a while until the teardown, found him hiding with the other one....QUESTION...can an electric flame scallop lose its electric characteristic? I don't see it anymore.

The maroon clown and dragon goby will hopefully be gone and traded in sometime in the near future, cause too much trouble.

I think my favorite fish is the watchman goby...they dont bother anyone, they have that special relationship with the pistol shrimp, I think its a unique quality to have.

It's good to be back, I still don't get instant email notification on this site for some STRANGE reason, so I have to remember to come back and look...SO LAME!!!! I mainly stick to michiganreefers.com, makes more sense staying on a forum that is local and with people I can trade, buy, and sell with.

Got any new pics of your tank to show me?

Steve

Nice pics, now I remember some of the pics...especially that one of the girl in the orange shirt sitting next to a Biocube with the huge smile on her face! I'd be smiling too if I got another one. I am still hoping my sister in law comes to her senses and gives me her little 8 gallon Biocube...it is just sitting in her back room barely running, just the low glow from the LED moonlights. I could whip that tank into shape and have me a frag tank to help support my addiction to saltwater. Oh well, I'll keep my fingers crossed.

These are a few pics I took 2 weeks ago. I've made a few changes since then but nothing drastic...moved some corals around as usual. Don't worry, that hippo is a week away from finding a new home. I've enjoyed him for several months watching him grow, but now it's time for him to find a new home for a great trade hopefully.
