Default 29G Overflow question

I was just wondering if anyone out there had any suggestions or expertise as far as what would be the best way to engineer a non-drilled tank to incorporate an overflow system for a sump. Any advice would be helpful... I have a 29G Reef tank and would like to combine it with a 10G set-up for a sump. I've thought about an overflow box but am worried about losing suction and in the process having aquarium water all over the floor. Also, any diagrams/pictures that show how your tank is plumbed would be greatly appreciated!

Hey Bryson, good to have you join us here at ReefBuilders.com I believe I can help you out in your overflow troubles. You will not lose suction power, if you properly maintain and monitor the system. There are actions you can take to control the amount of water flow to and from the tank as well. But first off you need to find an overflow box suitable for a 29 gallon tank, then a return pump that almost exactly matches that same number of Gallons Per Hour (GPH.) I will help you find one if your completely lost still. Here is a VERY simple sketch of what a typical refugium/sump would look like, and the plumbing to match..:

Hope this simple example helped your confusion out at least a little. Let me know if you have any further questions, comments or concerns..

Tony
