Default Need some help with a BTA

HI all!
Is a Rose BTA ok in a 29 gal with stock lighting?
I have had my BTA for a month now and he doesn't seem to be flourishing...For the past two days he has looked really bad...deflated and somewhat colorless, his tentacles are really small too...On the other hand, for the first time, I noticed today that my maroon clown is hosting him. It was a great sight to see except my anemone doesn't look too good...Anyone have any ideas?????? Any advice would be great! I just don't want to see him suffer.

If by stock lighting you mean compact fluorescent (CF, single tube) then no it probably is not sufficient enough for a BTA. They require Actinic lighting as well as 10K+ daylight bulbs or MH w/ supp. A simple retrofit kit or 50/50 dual PC's should do the trick.

Alright scratch that one then. Have you fed him lately? Any supplements? What are you parameters? Sometimes my nem will turn blue and shrink in size greatly, usually at night. It returns to normal within a day though, and he will do this repeatedly, even pulling all his tentacles in and looking like a stub.

I feed him brine shrimp 3 times a week. I have not added any supplements. My calcium is high, my nitrates are 0, my phosphates hit 0.5 (highest I have seen them), 0 nitrites, ph is 8.3, salinity is .0024 (too many zeros?), temp 81. It's odd to me, it lodged itself on a rock close to the bottom, very close to another rock. I figured it was ok there, since it settled there. Should I move it?
I did a 30% water change this evening to get rid of the phosphates.
I just don't want him to die considering I paid $70 for him....

It may be the Phosphates then, since anemones do not use calcification for skeletal growth, they usually are not harmed by elevated or inadequate calcium levels. .5 ppm is not harmful to fish but more coral because and your risk of an algae bloom is heightened which is why corals can be affected. Overfeeding, use of tap water for top offs or cleaning, dirty or defective RO/DI media that may need to be replaced, decay, feces, dead algae, pH and kH buffers, and even elevated use of marine salts can all contribute to a spike in Phosphate readings. PhosBan or RowaPhos have a good reputation for removing Phosphates out of the water column via activated carbon. Overall, a PhosBan Reactor will keep those pesky Phos. readings to almost undetectable levels (though Phosphates are always present in a marine system.)

How is the flow in your tank, if its swift then powerheads/flow heads may need to be repositioned or turned off for a bit so the anemone becomes comfortable in its surroundings. If he is latched to a single rock that is accessible, then yes, you can relocate him to a calm corner and see what happens. Continue doing water changes, maybe 2 or 3 a week. Also try and locate the source of the Phosphates, even with lots of water changes, they will always come back until it is pinpointed and removed.

Thanks! I appreciate the info! I have been using tap water (no problems or detectable phosphates before). I have soft coral in the tank and they are doing beautifully. I haven't had a problem with algae YET. I am going to be doing multiple water changes. The way the pumps are positioned is so that the water circulates calmly. I have the stock pump facing straight on the right side, and the powerhead is on the left wall facing towards the back wall. The anemone has positioned himself in the farthest corner from the flow. Hopefully, everything will be ok in the morning!

Default BTA is still alive!!!!!!!!!!

Just to update on the BTA
He is still alive! My clown however developed ich. I did a few fresh water dips and moved him to my hospital tank but he did not make it. Since I have removed my clown from the BTA his tentacles got their beautiful rose color back but have not extended much. He looks much better now...Could the ich have affected the anemone? Could the anemone given the clown ich? I have had that maroon clown for 3 years! I am sorry to see him go...
If anyone has any ideas as to what happened...please let me know so this does not happen again!
THANKS!
Michelle
