I would have to say 1 gallon any smaller would be almost impossible to take care of.

I think anything under 5 gal is considered a "pico" tank, I have one thats 1.2 gal's but it has a 140 gal sump lol

I've kept a 5.5 gal. pico tank. It didn't last long though because I failed to do regular maintenance and I was broke at the time. I've seen 0.6 gallon tanks on other sites I post too.

I would never recommend a pico or nano tank to a newcomer unless it is all he or she can afford.

Also, a small tank attached to a larger sump isn't really all that bad. It easier to clean a 5.5 gal. then a 140 gal. Also, he may have several tanks plumbed into that 140 gal. sump.

I was planning on using a 30 gal. breeder with 50 gal. sump because I like smaller tanks.

i keep a 10 gallon and it works out just fine. a 10 gallon is great for beginners and perfessionals. especially great for small space. i also have 2 55 gallon tanks. one is being used for fresh water. and one is getting fixed up so i can use it for my saltwater

ill use a shot glass and have some bacteria in it, and one blue leg hermit in there! i was looking on ebay, i htink i might need a MH for the shot glass though. i was also thinking of getting a skimmer, a few powerheads, a sump/fuge. ya know, the basics.
