I have a 29gal bio cube and my water is @80 degrees i have always had it between 78 and 80, but lately with the warmer weather its been staying at 80 even know I have my heater set at 77 or 78. I have no problem with the live stock or the corals i have staying alive. What temp are u at right now? Higher than 80?

This sucks I went home yesterday after work and was looking at my tank and did'nt realize that my temp was above 82 or 83 degrees. The weather here in jersey has been pretty mild so my wife kept the air off in the house for almost a week an I guess thats what brought the temp up. I did put the air back on lastnight so I hope that will bring it down some, also when i get home if i have to i will turn down the thermostat in the tank. I hope we both can get these tanks down. Hey mike how did floating the ice bags work for you?

i have a 29gallon cube and was also looking into some type of chiller. they are all too expensive for my taste. my tank was getting to be around the 85degree mark so i put one of those small fans behind it and just open up the back of the lid. i have also found that just leaving the back lid open usually does the trick and keeps the tank usually around 81 or 82. the lid has those to help cool but i think the lights are more than they can handle. you could always freeze up some ro water into ice cubes and throw some into the tank every now and then, i bet that would work. for me..it will be another story when winter comes and the air conditioning isnt running. we shall see.

i thought about somehow adding another fan to the lid. maybe buy another fan like the ones already integrated into the lid, somehow cut out a piece of the back lid and attach it so it sucks out the warm air from under the lid and pulls it out. not sure if i want to chop up my bio-cube lid. anyone else have any suggestions??

IM HAVING SAME PROBLEM here. What I did was put an occislating room fan near the tank and opened the small feeding lid during the day. It has seemed to bring down the temp 2 degrees. I also shortened the time I have the lights on.
It will get better when the weather gets cooler.....GL

hey they have DIY project for homemade chillers they require a fridge but you can go to craigslist.com and most likely get one for free. im waiting to find one close to me because I cant afford the gas to drive. it will prob cost about $80 all in all to make but what the hell my tank runs at about 85-87... . one other thing that helps is to run your tank at night too when its cooler anyways, its dropped my temp bout 4 degrees doing it that way. or a fan on the water but that will obviously make it evap quicker

The Cadlights cooler is just a fan. It will work, but only if there is an open area you can install it on.

If you have a fully enclosed canopy, check into the thermoelectric chillers. They run on 12v DC. They will pull the water temp down, but have no thermostat. They are either on or off. You can switch them on and off manually, but rigging a thermostat would be difficult. Not impossible, but not easy.

Nanotuners and nanocustoms carry them.

Default Any updates on the Bio-Cube chiller issue?

I want to keep a breeding pair of seahorses in a 29G Bio-Cube and they require temps in the upper 60s to low 70's. I thought I would bump this thread up for some new eyes to look at this topic. Any experience out there with small (external) chillers?

I don't run a heater or a chiller in my 12 gallon.

Maybe it's the mild weather in OR, but when the one time it was too hot I proped the lid open turned the lights out and put ziploc bags of ice cubes to float on tht top.

You can also leave the lid open and run a fan so that it just skims the top of the water.

Might soud like a pain...but in this hobby we sure have that plesure pain thing going on .

I don't think evaporative cooling or ice cubes would work in a seahorse tank...I need constant temps in the 60 degree range...

Your talking about two different types of tanks. Horses like lagoon type of environments. Reefs like crazy flow. If your doing a sea horse tank you dont need lights that would heat up the tank imo...

If you need constant temps in the 60 degree range, you need a chiller.

OR you need to crank up the AC and keep the room the tank is in so that the entire room remains at the temperature you want the tank to stay at.

It is impossible to pull the tank temperature that far below the ambient temperature using only fans. For the most part, fans simply cancel out the heat added by lights. But if the air temperature is 75 degrees, it is not reasonable to expect that air to keep water in the 60 degree range. Not without a considerable amount of evaporation.

What you probably want is one of those 1/10 or 1/15 HP chillers. Not the thermoelectric things. That is your best bet. This way, you can keep the room set to whatever makes you comfortable.

I have a 12G nanao and I leave the little feed cover open.. otherwise it gets very warm. I have also cut the time I keep the lights on...

Just in case there is any question about seahorses in a bio-cube: Click on the image to see a short video...

1/10 hp chiller with an built-in heater control keeps the temp at a steady 73 to 75 degrees.

It works when I click on the video. It runs a full 2 minutes. Maybe your computer is not configured for Photobucket videos? I don't know what to tell you.
