Default New seahorse nano tank!

I did it! I waited the weeks until my little nano tank cycled and then tonight I took the 1 hour drive to San Francisco to purchase my sea horses. I am so thrilled with my new little friends. I have 2 gold and one black, plus a nice red coral for them to hitch to. I puchased some ghost shrimp and gave them dinner and they all ate. I am going to set up a little gallon tank with ghost shrimp for their feed. Here are my first pictures.

This is a shot of the tank. Since it is so small and has the rounded corners it is going to be a little more difficult to get good shots.

This is a shot of the coral and the smallest of the gold ponies.

This is the three of them after they had dinner.

And I am not sure what is going on here. I know I have a lot to learn about these charming little creatures. Anyone have any hints on keeping them happy?

I really like this little tank.

Thanks for all the kind words. It is a 12 gallon with a filter system on the back. They are so much fun to watch. Today my LFS had a white male so I picked him up. He is one happy pony...3 girls, 1 male! They are worth every penny spent and minute taken to take care of them. They each have a personality all their own.

Ok I'm Jealous I want one and I want it now . Lets see room is 20x20, full size bed, computer and desk, recliner chair, dorm size frig, 20 gal freshwater tank, 55 gal freshwater tank 10 gal saltwater tank 20 gal sump/refugium , 2 small dogs (Affenpinscher & Maltese) and Me 300lb+. Do you think I could still have room to smile if I add 12 gal tank? Opps TV dvd player Book case for dvd's DVR tuner box supplies for all the tanks. I may need to rip out a wall. There you go can you hang a 12 gal tank on the wall? All joking aside I love that tank

Seahorses would be really cool - but I have concluded they are too high maintenance for me.

But yours look great! Excellent job. Good luck with em!

Well it has been two days since my BIG surprise in my seahorse tank...baby seahorses...lots of them! We didn't find them until the next morning so most of them were lost to older seahorses, and the filter system. We have saved 5 and they are doing well in their own little tank we just purchased today.

I thought the male was getting fat, but I had only had him less than two weeks. I looked it all up on the computer night before last and was shocked when I woke up to babies.

We are hoping at least one survives, but if not we are now ready for the next time it happens. So does anyone on the list have experience with breeding these little ponies??

Very very cool. Someday (perhaps early next year) when my new office is built at work I may add a nano tank there. If so I was thinking of going with Pipefish and Seahorses for the nano.

Congrats on the babies the Seahorses look great.

Ladydragon, how are your littlest ponies? Did any survive?

Ive read an article not long ago about a LFS trying to keep little herds of them alive.
THAT is DEFINITELY not a easy task.

HI,

I had ponies for years.. As long as they eat frozen mysis they are as easy as any saltwater fish IMO. ITS ALL ABOUT WATER QUALITY! As far as the babies... I managed to keep quite a few alive through the years... The best way to try to keep the babies alive is to get a good brine shrimp station going FIRST! Get 2 or3 going if you can! Then I also made a makeshift 1 gallon nursery "tank" to go INTO the main tank. **** To do this get a ONE gallon plastic fish bowl and cut the bottom off and glue gun a piece of tank divider On the bottom (for water flow)in it's place. THEN*** drill small holes on BOTH sides of the plastic 1 G bowl & then cover those holes with the divider material. (again for water flow) I made 4 holes in a row on each side.... CLIP this new home INTO the main tank. Using this type of "home" for the new babies will stress them out less because they are in the same water. Also you wont have to take care of 2 tanks and worry about "STRONG" currents on the new babies.***** Also use the small grass type decor things for hitching posts for the babies...
The babies will need to be fed like baby birds.. SMALL AMOUNTS EVERY FEW HOURS.. for the first few weeks...ALOT OF WORK BUT THE RESULTS ARE WORTH IT!!Hope this helps you... It worked VERY well for me!!!
OH BTW.. When you see the male start birthing.. SHUT OFF ALL THE PUMPS!!

Where do you find a one gallon plastic fish bowl?
I am trying to envision this nursery and how it might fit into a Bio-Cube...

Thanks.

I didn't even know you could breed seahorses in captivity. The new babies sound great. Good luck with them.
