Default My tank

I was looking at my son's tank today and realized 1) I need to clean my equipment and 2) I haven't shared. Be kind, I stink with a camera.

And a couple from my husband's tank. It is still under construction...but I wanted to show the new gobies.

The goby/shrimp trio did not want to be photographed today...maybe next time

Your sons tank is real nice. How much do you let him get involved in the maintenance ? It has to be a real good learning tool for him. I had freshwater tanks when our kids where young through high school. Two of my girls have stayed in the hobby and one girl and son are in to other pets but not fish. I think it is a grate way to teach responsibility and fun fore us also.

My sons doesn't mess with maintenance. But he gets to pick the things that he wants, and is a good sport when we say that we cannot support this or that in the tank. He chose the fish, he chose the mushrooms, the clove polyps, the zoas. There is a brittlestar in there and he had to have that.

When we started the hobby with one tank, he would stare at all of the books and ask "What's that?" When we go to the LFS he tells the owner what he has in the tanks. He have invertebrate ID books, Audubon snail shell ID books...he knows where to look to find what he is looking for because he has gone through the pages so many times. We were at the neighbors and he was looking at shells. Pulled one up and said, "This is a trochus." It was.

The other day he was messing around with his litebrite and he made a fish (he is 4 and I was impressed). If I draw his fish for him he will color them with their exact colors...and if he messed up he scraps it and tells me to draw another one.

17 in H, 24 in W

Like I said, I am still working on the husband's tank. Took all of the CC out and replaced it with LS (haven't seen cyano since!). The base rock, is where it should be, not on top of the sand, so we lost a little height. The sump created some extra flow. The zoas have grown into the rock, so whoever gets that piece of LR in the next couple of years should be happy. His discosoma have always done well. He has other things in there, but I am waiting for better photos. Maybe I'll give a good update in a month. I'm itching to put something in there, I do not know what.

question on the water pumps..i see you have some korailia pumps in your 20gallons. what is everyones opinion on the directions the jets are placed?? should some be pointed towards the surface for a lil agitation action?? i have 2 of those pumps in my 29gallon, one is buried behind the live rock in the rear to stir up anything that might fall in the crevices..the other is just pointed straight ahead, plus the return jet that is part of the filtration system....can you have too much water flow? i know you dont want your fish getting whipped around inside the tank.

Yeah you can have too much flow. Both 20 gallons have a HK1, my husband has a sump and the return line was pointed so that all of the fish were hanging out around the same area for awhile until he moved it. Because of the rock placement in my son's tank, I seem to have less flow directed in places that could used a little extra. Those hks are bulky, but not so bulky at the same time.

My hks are pointed toward the surface because (and this is my personal preference, nothing scientific about it) I have zoanthids that need stronger flow. The star polyp needs it and the cloves like it, as well.

Great tanks, thanks for sharing. I think it's great that your son is so involved. He probably knows more than many of us do!

My 1 yr old (My yoda avatar) likes to look at the tanks. The QT is in the livingroom...that is his tank. He's a little upset by the fact that there is nothing in it right now.
