Default Brown algae returns...

Hi, we have a 12g nano with a black/white clown, 5 blue leg hermit crabs, 1 mushroom, 2 soft corals, and 3 snails (2 margaritas and one thats orange - not sure what it is the guy at the LFS didnt know but we got one anyway) It has about 11-12 # of live rock. The tank has been up since September and has cycled.

Within the last week, we seem to be getting a bloom of brown algae (diatoms I assume), Its my understanding that this happens while the tank is cycling. We have some tiny amounts of green algae growing in a few spots and there is no amonia, nitrites or nitrates present in the water. Any ideas on whats causing this? it seems to be concentrated on one rock, the sand in the front of the tank, and n the back wall. We have done two 20% water changes and stired up the sand beofre the water change... it seems to disappear for a day but comes back?????

Thanks,

Rick

Silicates will feed diatoms. Check your water for them.

We have 2 tanks, only one has the problem. (so far) would that still indicate the water?

The tank stated to stink like dead fish... we lost 2 orange turbo snails... somehting was nasty... I took the tank down, cleaned it, and did a 80% water change. I even replaced the sand as that was most smelly! Here is the reconstituted tank.

any idea what may have gone wrong so maybe I can avoif the 4 hours of work in the near future

Rick...tap water = work. I suggest getting an RO/DI unit and do water changes with it. Do not add anything for awhile. You get a lot of stuff you do not want with tap water.

make sure you bought the right kind of hermits. The kind they sell in the pet store in the wire cages are different than the ones for fish tanks!
