| Re: out of curiosity Out of my own personal experience between RO/DI and tap water, RO/DI water is the way to go. For the first 2 years my tank was running I was using tap water and never really say much growth, except algae. Now, for the past 6-7 months, I have been using RO/DI water and it makes such a difference. ALL my corals is much happier and growing! All I know is that once you go RO/DI you wont go back.

| Re: out of curiosity Do not add tap!! I learned the hard way. If my tank had been a human the point at which I started adding tap is when a man would go through his midlife crisis. It smelt like sin, looked like crap, had stuff dying all over it, and seeing it made me want to cry! DO NOT ADD TAP WATER IF YOU LIKE YOUR TANK!!!!!!!!

| Re: out of curiosity Every one has their own opinion. Fair enough. The problem is that when you flip you "behavior" to match what ever the "opinion" of the day is you are going to run into grief. Tap vs RO. In my experience tap is ok to start with providing you do not have old pipes, or live on an agricultural aquifer. If the trace elements in your water are good for you, it won't be a long term issue for your tank. The real trouble arises when you top your tank with tap water. The evaporation leaves behind all the dissolved minerals. That builds up over time and causes serious issues. Top your tank/sumps up with RO. Avoid copper or other heavy metal risks if you can. But if you have to use tap water try getting a in-line carbon filter. It will greatly reduce the risks of metals, combined with a chelating chemical and de-chlorinators it will get you buy. Aftern all the smoke clears, Run RO if you can afford it. It's the best option.
