Icon14 Replacing bio balls ?

I have a 29 biocube and i was wondering if it would be a good idea to take the bio balls out of the middle chamber and throw in some rubble rock? has anyone done this?

I am pretty sure that it is always a good idea to replace any bio balls with live rock rubble.

how long has your 29gallon been up and running with the bio balls? my 29gal cube has been running for over a year with the bio balls. i thought about replacing them about 4-5 months after i had it up and running but then i was afraid i would upset the balance of the tank and create a nitrate/ammonia spike and kill some stuff.

i am gonna start making my own filter cartridges...gonna buy some of that pond filter sponge media, stick it into the 1st chamber and drop a media bag with some charcoal in it into the chamber as well..its gotta be better and cheaper than paying $7 for 2 cartridges. they say you only need to change them out 1 time a month but i replace my cartridge every week when i do my 5-6 gallon water change...they get so nasty.

My tank has been up and running for about 4 weeks now, but it was started with some established rock and water from an old tank. wasnt sure if it was too late to change to the ruble rock or not? Ive got my clean up crew and three fish in it already so it might not be worth the risk?

ya let me know how making your own filters go, cause im paying 8$ for two and i have to change it about every two weeks
