Default What the heck is this?

I bought this rock with a bunch of bright green mushrooms on it a little more than a month ago. It had some yellow stuff on it that I thought was glue or something, but now its growing. Does any one know what it is? Its the yellowish thing dead center in the two pictures:

not sure but it looks like some kind of sponge. The bottom picture especially. If it gets to big you can always cut it away off of the rock. I would let it go a little longer before doing anything. It might be something you end up liking. I have lots of things that have popped up growing on my rocks that I have just left there. Looks more natural I think.

Yeah, the pictures there actually don't quite do them justice, I need to fuss with the white balance on my camera for my aquarium lighting. I'm actually doing a project on aquarium photography for college course. Its really cool, but really difficult b/c the lighting is different in every aquarium which screws with color balance. I might start a thread in the photography forum to show my progress. Anywho, heres a pic under actinic lighting that makes the mushrooms glow crazy green. They're on the left:

They also glow very nicely under my lunar light. I think mushrooms are a very underated coral, you just have to wait for the right ones that really have nice colors.

Those look awesome! I'd be interested in hearing about the aquarium photography course...and I'm sure others would be too!

Its just a photography course, I've taken several throughout school and this one is a pre-requisite for my major (graphic design). I chose aquarium photography for my portfolio subject because it can give you stunning shots with amazing natural colors, and is a great way to learn about color balance, white balance, and light temperature. Every aquarium has different lighting, so every aquarium has to be approached differently when shooting. Check the thread I started in the reef photography forum for cleaner pics, these are just snapshots above

its called a yellow sponge, and actually grows in poor water quality. not saying yours is poor just that where you got it from might. it's really a neat sponge if you can keep it alive which isn't hard if you keep it out of the air( even for a second)
now teach me to take good pics of my aquarium. i don't have any i'm not embarassed to show
