Everything depends on what you plan on keeping - fish, coral, etc. Forget gravel. Use live sand instead.

I think you need to read the beginner's articles. They will help you get started.

Don't use a canister filter if you can help it. Use a sump instead, it will make life easier in the long run. Also we don't generally use gravel in this hobby...live sand only (well some people use crushed coral...but they almost always regret it)! Keep reading and asking questions though, that's the most important thing to do in this hobby.

for my 50 corner i use the rena xp3. a sump would be great but no room with the corner tank. an xp4 would be better, gives an extra basket for media. live sand, live sand and live sand. ok said that, now look into the lighting. if you plan on a fish only compacts or flo. lights with a kelvin temp of up to 10,000 degrees is fine, if you plan on corals, metal halide is your best bet three to four watts is a good rule of thumb, but not exact. depends on the depth. with a color temp of 10,000 to 14,000. protien skimmers next. again fish only not needed but a good idea, mini-reef its a must. other than that you'll need patience, and thesense of humor to learn from the many mistakes that will be made.

You can take a look at lifereef.com. Stuff is on the $$ side, but well built and gets great reviews. If nothing else, the site will give you descriptions and pictures of various parts of a good filtration system. Give it a go, it is free to look.lol best of luck
