A needle wheel skimmer gets fed water directly through the needle wheel pump and into the skimmer. A recirc needle wheel skimmer has a separate feed pump from the needle wheel pump that is connected directly to the skimmer. A recirc skimmer will perform better, but the difference my not be that substantial, may require an additional pump (depending on how it is setup) and they cost more to purchase. One advantage is that they are easier to setup outside of a sump.
