First and foremost, you must cure the rock (if it is not already cured) before you add anything living to the tank. You can add the rock and the water together but wait a day and check the ammonia level before adding any livestock. If the rock is not cured the ammonia reading will go off the chart for a few days/weeks. Wait until the the ammonia drops to 0 and you are ready to rock n roll.

I had my tank up and running for 4 weeks prior to adding cured live rock. I put food in for the live sand. That way the tank had already cycled.

Please consider not putting in any livestock until after live rock is in.

Put the live rock in after your water is mixed and in your tank. If it's a new tank without any inhabitants, then you can let your rock cure in your DT. Live rock, given enough of it with enough die-off, can even cause your cycle to start. This is a good thing for a new tank, bad thing for an established tank. Once your ammonia and nitrite levels are 0 and your nitrate levels are below 10-20, you can add livestock. NOT until then.

Don't know if this is what they used, but a lot of people use raw, unprocessed shrimp from the grocery store to start the cycle. One is generally enough to complete a cycle. Two if you've got a bigger tank.
