Default filter question???????

Hi All,
I have a 30 gallon oceanic and 21.95 lbs of live rock in it. I have an emperor 400 filter filtering the tank. At what point can i switch to a different filter? Or do I need to? I was told that once I reach the magical number of 45 lbs. of live rock i can remove the filter and go with a protein skimmer? If so what would anybody recomend? Can I do that with 30 lbs. of live rock? I have seen the formula 1 to 1.5 lbs of live rock for every gallon.

Thanks,
Java

I just asked a filter question yesterday and still no response. But from what I read the best thing is to have a protein skimmer, LR and LS. I have an aquaclear 150, but I am patiently waiting to buy a protein skimmer. Need cash.

Live rock and live sand along with a nice protein skimmer is key. However you do need a mecanhical filter to filter out particles in the water. Having a HOB filter is fine, the key is to change the filter media regulary at least more than once a month. If you don't your nitrate level will shoot thru the roof and your fish will die because of it.

I am not sure where you heard the magical number of 45lbs of LR, I would have at least 1lb per gallon.

For the protein skimmer, what is your budget?

i have a medium budget for the protein skimmer...could i just get a HOB filter that would normally go on a 15 gallon that has a bio wheel with it along with the 30 lbs of live rock (once i build up to it)? would i also need to get some kind of water flow going or would the filter be sufficient?

Do you want to do a reef, fish only or fish only with live rock (FOWLR)?

You need more flow in your aquarium then just the HOB filter, you can achieve this thru power heads. I would ditch the bio-wheel, there is no reason to keep them in saltwater.

Look at the coralife needlewheel CSS skimmer

mainly FOWLR and maybe one or two coral(some of the brighter ones). So i can get a HOB with just mechanical and chemical (no bio) a power jet to mover the water flow and a protein skimmer. All as long as I get to the magic number of around 30 lbs or more of liverock?
