Default Live Rock Losing its Color????

When I first bought the live rock it had beatiful pinks, reds and various other colors. I have steadily noticed that it is losing it color and this greenish, brownish dinge creeping in. It doesn't look like algae, no fine hairs are present??? Anything I can do to bring back the vibrant color or is this just standard???

Thanks,
Java

Did this rock go into a new tank? It's probably getting covered with diatoms & green algae. Do you have a clean-up crew? That should take care of the problem.

go to Saltwaterfish.com - Saltwater Fish, Saltwater Fish Aquariums, Tropical Fish, and Saltwater Fish Tanks and check out the clean up crew link on the left.

i have been using distilled water to top off the tank, unitl i can get back to the aquarium place i use to get RO water. I am just using the flourescent lighting that came with tank. it is on for about 5 hours in the evening. will the color come back to the live rock? or have i ruined the color of it???

distilled is better then the tap water I'm sure.

its good to hear your making an effort not to use the tap

I suggest at least some power compact lighting if you wanna get the purple/pink coraline algaes back...

I'm not sure what your goals are for corals in the long rong or the size of your tank...

if you need some help you can send me a PM and I could help with what I know...

My rock is doing the same thing. It's a 55 gallon, new tank with compact lighting. It has been running with live sand 1 week....added live rock and ran for a week.......last Saturday added 2 percula clowns. Have been doing daily water changes so the fish won't die but my rock is turning white. There is still some color on the bottom. Nitrites are 1.0 and Nitrates are 160. Ph and Ammonia are good. Help!!!!!!

if the rock was not cured properly this is normal. the coraline is dying off due to a new envioment. with proper calcium and time it will become a very vibrant place again. also daily water changes are very stressful to the fish in the tank. i would remove the fish till the tank has completely cycled. daily water changes also slow down the building of benifical bacteria.
