Filtering questions

Hi, I have a 55gal glass tank the I got from a friend and am going to set up a reef tank. I want to use a sump/refugium. What is the diffence beteen the 2. I mean other than just adding a light. To turn you sump into a refugium what do you add and takeaway? I plan on useing a sump mounted skimmer also. I have seen some pretty good deals on ebay for complete refugiums. the said they came with bio-balls. do these take the place of live rock/ live sand? Any light shead on this subject will be of great help! Thanks in advance.

Ray

The sump is a place that holds water, other than your tank. The refuge is a place where algae and other organims can grow and prosper other than your tank. A refuge usually has sand and cheato. With a light on a opposite light setting than your main tank lights.

You can either build your own, or buy one online. I bought mine online, I am not much of a DIY. It sits directly below, has all my equipment, such as Protein Skimmer, UV, Ph probe, Temp, etc. I then have one main return pump back into my tank.

Ya I seen a really good deal for one on ebay. It is for a 150 gal tank but will fit under my stand real nicely. It come with a protein skimmer, pump, Light for when I decide to do the refugum, some other things also. I think it is a real good deal. Well if you think of any good advice please send it this way. I am sure I will have more questions.

When you set it up, post your setup on here with pictures step by step, day by day, etc. You'll make less mistakes that way.

I'm not much of a DIY person either, but I have plans to build a sump/fuge out of a 20 gallon long tank in the near future. I just want to get my hands dirty really...

I attached a picture of the sump design I like best. My 20 gallon won't be to those dimensions though.

Thanks. I have a question on the filter media. What should I use? The blue and white pads? Carbon? If I don't do the refug right off does the filter media change and if it does what should I use then?

I would use sump socks. They really work the best, and you can change them out every week. Simple to do.
