Default Sand question

I know, yet another sand question. Friend of mine told me to take out and add more new live sand to the tank every 6 to 8 months. Is this correct? I was inquiring about keeping nitrate levels down, mine are at 20 right now and don't look to be dropping anytime soon. I already have a 2 inch sand bed with some crushed coral in it that I just barely 2 months or so ago added new live sand to.
Would taking out old sand and adding new live one to the tank aide in lowering Nitrate levels? Or just be worth keeping all things living happy inside the tank?
There are a few live sands on the market, any thoughts about Carib-sea live sand?

Thanks in advance again to anyone who tackles this question.

I wouldn't do that, it will only put your tank into another cycle unnecessarily. Water changes are the best thing for high nitrates. What kind of filtration are you using? Certain filtration types will skyrocket your nitrates if not kept in check.

As volitan said, removing the sand would mean loss of beneficial bacteria & you'd have a cycling issue. You'd also end up possibly removing any good sand stirring worms, etc. Only thing I might do is remove the crushed coral if possible. The smaller grain sand will have a tendency to settle through it causing it to rise to the surface.

Thanks again. I'd thought of that, if removing sand would throw off my tank. Couple months ago I removed some while switching from my regular 45 gal to a 45 gal stretch hex. There was too much crushed coral and I didn't want that in there from the very beginning, but the guy at the pet store said I had to.
I have the water changes down pretty good.
I'm really glad to have found this site, everyone here has been such a great help. Thanks!

never remove your basic bio filtration uless it becomes infested with pollutants; chemicals, soap ( friends ex-girl did this to his) and other nasties. otherwise let it do its job
