Default Protein Skimmer

I was wondering if I should get a protein skimmer for my 29 gal obc? I seen the web site GLAMPKA posted called nanotuners.com and i see that they have one for my tank. Do I need one of these? If someone could explain what the protein skimmer does it might make it easier for me to cough of the dough. Once again thanx for all the help!!!

Many people have successfully kept a reef tank without using a skimmer. If that is what you would like to do, then be sure to religiously do water changes. Also, if you have a low bio load you could probably get by without one. Protein skimmers remove many of the dissolved contaminants that are in the water. If it were me, I'd use a skimmer. You'd be surprised at the amount of smelly gunk they they remove.

Just want to say thanks guys I will buy the skimmer when I get paid. One more thing I would like to ask everyone, is it normal to have little bubbles all in the tank water? Will the skimmer help this problem out? All water levels seem to be fine just puzzled..

It all depends on where they are coming from. A skimmer definitely won't help the bubbles problem.

Do you have a sump? The little bubbles, or micro bubbles, are why many people have baffels between the overflow and the return sections of their sumps. They help prevent microbubbles from finding their way into the display. They are cuased by the fast moving water from the overflow mixing with air when it hits the surface of the water in sump. There are other cuases as well, but this is one of the main ones. I'm having the same problem with my set up right now and am working out different preventative measures. I don't think they are in issue with a FO set up, but once you start getting into corals the microbubbles will collect under some types of corals and form small air pockets causing problems for the corals.

Many people have problems with them. They have to fiddle and fuss with them and do not work as well...just what I have read.

I had a 55 corner bow with a Seaclown 100. Firstly, it only pulled out watery skimmate, the times that it pulled anything at all. Secondly, like was said the air adjuster was difficult to adjust right and would never stay adjusted for long. Thirdly, said air adjuster assembly broke after 5 months and rendering the whole unit useless as a skimmer and more an air agitator, and lastly, upon cleaning the skimmer itself after a month and a half of service, the elbow seal at the bottom of unit broke when attempting to clean, I fixed it with silicone, but the 2 day wait for the silicone to dry would always stress out my fish and eventually led to less frequent cleaning of said skimmer and you can see why I don't recommend this piece of rubbish. You can get a CSS for about the same cost and that skimmer will at least pull some skimmate.
