i want to upgrade to saltwater/reef aquarium. i have a 45 gal corner aquarium that's not being used. prob is i would like to have a sump but the opening to the bottom cabinet is quite small....7 1/2 inches wide by 12 inches high. how big does the sump need to be to be effictive? ty in advance for your help. lots of good info here.

How much room do you have inside the cabinet? What about taking the back off the cabinet to get the sump in?

i could do that, or i could drop the sump in from the top before i set up the main tank. prob is that if anything happens....i won't be able to remove the sump w/o draining the main tank. ??

I would say that what ever way you get the sump in the bottom, is how you are going to get it out, unless you have some power tools.

could i put the sump in the basement and have my show tank on the first floor.....would save a lot of trouble i think?
