Default powerhead question

I have 2 aquaclear 30s, which state they pump out 150gph. Tank size is 29gallon. I do not have a powerhead in the tank. Is this enough water movement?

If not, should I purchase 2 small powerheads or just 1 big one.

Put it behind live rock pointing down? up?

You don't want any dead spots in the tank. Don't knowing how the rock is set up it's difficult to say. I would put a mid-size head behind the rock to get circulation there.

I have the rock mostly towards the back covering most of it. Should I place the powerhead in the middle facing up?

I'd place it at the end sweeping across the base of the rock.

I also just added two powerheads to my aquarium. I had one, plus the movement from the HOB filter and skimmer. The two new powerheads are Maxi-jet 1200's rated at 295 gph each. My tank is 75 gallons. Should this provide enough movement? Also I noticed that my temp. has risen from 79 to about 83 degrees since I added these and a PC light the other day. It seems to have stablized at 83. Is this normal. Should I be concerned about this temp? Thanks.

I recently raised the flow in my tank from 100gph to 330gph and the temperature went up 5 degrees. I've heard you want to stay around 78 which is where all the tanks at my LFS areif you look in the guides section( i think ) it is recomended that you have 20x the flow in gph than your tank is in gallons. so you have 590 with the power heads so unless your hob filter and skimmer bump it up to 1500gph that shouldn't be enough. read that article though.

You'd be better off with the MJ 900 instead of the 1200. They use less power which means less heat transferred to the water.

I'd purchase a Tunze Nanostream or the new Hydor Korelia's

These new style powerheads have a diverse flow vs the standard powerheads direct flow..

all in all the new tunze/hydor have a better diverse and more gentle flow.. They are also very efficent with the wattages they consume as well...

There's also the SEIO's too, they are nice as well, I use a couple 820's in my 90.. I have a Tunze 6060 coming soon as well

You can always take those cheapo maxi jets and mod them and get up to 2000 gph out of them. I just finished modding 2 of mine. Wow what a difference that made.

Yeah I did that to some 1200's I had, they were a bit to noisey for me though (somthing I did when I modded them), BUT by doing the mod as you said, not only are you gettin serious flow, its also that diverse flow which is a whole lot better then the regular maxi-jets flow...

Thumbs up for the mod, I totally forgot about that, hehe

How do you do the mod to the MJ 1200. Is there a site or instructions on what to do somewhere? Thanks. Might the mod also help with the heat issue?

Hope I,m not breaking any rules with these links. I'm just rying to help a fellow reefer out. If I am not allowed to link to any of these please let me know and I will make sure to not do it again. The bottom link is a collection of videos related to reefkeeping. If you look around in there you will see on for the maxi-jet mod. It was very informative.

Thanks for the mod posts. I think I might buy a mod kit to start with for now. Then later when I can get a little extra ree time I'm going to try a diy mod on the other powerhead. Again thanks.
