Default Distilled Water

Can I use distilled water to set up a 90 gal tank? I have aquired a distiller for free and do not have an RO system yet.

Yes distilled water is the next best thing to RO/DI water.

is the distiller basically a canister for boiling water that tapers into a coil for cooling and condensation? I'm thinking I might like to make a small one.
Thanks.

I was actually looking into this as well. We have 2 20 gal tanks and one 10 gal for hospital purposes. I am also looking into RO system but still in the infant stages of research.

ry77 - you've pretty much nailed it right on the head. By the time you get finshed boiling the water, you'd be better off to just buy the distilled water.

www.airwaterice.com Products and answers for your water treatment needs. has a small RO filter called MightyMite - is perfect for the smaller reef keeper. Just ordered 1 & waiting for it to come in

I thought that distilled water is not good for fish as the distilling process removes EVERYTHING. All nutrients/elemtnts and what not. Or does this not apply to salt water fish? Does the salt mix replace all the needed nutrients that the fish need?

That is true it does remove everything but its better than putting tap water in your tank.

Ok, never mind. I have been looking around and found that distilled water is ok for marine tanks, but bad for freshwater. The salt mix must give it everything the fish need. Sorry! Ignore me!

I noticed on my last trip to a local Wal-mart that they now sell RO water. It is actually called out as this. It is only $0.11 p/gln. May be something to look into for topping off your tank or doing small water changes.

Is that in a bulk "refill" station?

Yes, you can get any size container they have. We have a drinking water refill station at the wal-mart in my city. It doesn't say how it is purified. But at the other wal-mart they actually have a setup that says it is RO treated water.

I'm curious if anyone has tried a Brita filter for RO water production? I have one hooked up to my faucet. Seems like it should work, but I'm curious if anyone has done it.

a RO/DI system is the best way to go for pure clean water. and distilled will add up in the long run. topping of the tank all the time is going to kill your budget. distilled in the beginning is ok but invest in a RO/DI system and save some money
