Default water prep

What does everybody do to get their water ready for their tank. Do I need a RO/DI setup or is just a RO process sufficient. The guy at the local fish store says that he just dumps tap water in the tank and treats it there with additives. I'm about to fill a 75 gal tank for the first time.

Don't dump tap water into your tank and then treat. I would suggest to stop going to that LFS if he told you that. Use RO water, RODI is best, but RO water will be fine. I but my RO water in a 40 gallon container (plastic garbage can from Lowes or Home Depot) and then add salt, mix, heat, check for ph and salinity and Im done!

I agree with Ryan, that's how I prepare my water.
Stop going to the LFS that told you to use tap water , especially in the tank. That's not good advice.
