Just got 80lbs of live rock TODAY from Reef aquarium invertebrates and reef safe fish. Paid 2.15 per pound, free shipping to my door. Packaged perfectly and it is really nice looking, cant beat their deal. Highly recomend them.

Have to look into them as an alternative if my LFS is too high. Which more than likely he will be.

For the live sand I usaually go with 1.5pounds per gallon but I've been seeing more and more people going for the deep sand beds and then you would obviously need more per pound. I also really like the Carib Sea live sand. With the live rock its hard to say how many pounds because some of it is is more porous, thus lighter than others.

yes, the more porous the better IMO.... because then more beneficial bacteria can grow.

Its not a matter of opinion. If you want it to be LR it needs to be porous.

well, some Lr is more porous than others. on liveaquaria, if you look at the LR, they say how many lbs you should have per gallon of water. like carribean, need .75-1.15lbs per gallon.

fiji foundation rock on the other hand should have anywherer from 1.25-1.75 lbs per gallon because it is less porous.

Also need to be thinking about that if its less porous that means its more dense. More dense means heavier So when you buy more of it it will be closer to the same volume.

exactly, but since it is denser, that means less water will be getting inside, thus creating less beneficial bacteria!

I hate to rain on anyones parade and I seem to do it a lot so. That 2$ live rock is generally sold by rock importers who cant sell it for regular price because the pieces are to small, large pieces that have been around for a few days,or just about any reason you can think of that takes it out of the 6$ a pound catagory. There is also such a thing as "boat rock"which is rock imported by boat rather than flying it to the US which takes weeks instead of days.It is also rumored that some portion of the boat rock is taken outside of legal export quotas. In this hobby you have to remember that you get what you pay for.

vaman is corrent, when i was looking around to get my LR, i was looking and looking and wanted to get sometthing cheap, but also wanted it to be good quality. so i decided to go the carribean. it also looks like you have more than you really do. (in the pic, there is nly about 65lbs and the rest is in my fuge underneath.)

here is a pic in my 55. the only bad things, is that it does NOT come cured, so it will take the tank a little more time to cycle.

Hey Elliott, I believe you said you bought your rocks from Aquarialife correct. You said though that it didn't come cured. Is curing the same thing as seeding or is this a diffrent process entirely. If I'm not mistaken all that has to be done when curing is that the LR has to be put in the tank for an extended period. But I could be way off though.

I would buy 2$ rock and waiting a little while longer even though I'm not sure I will have to yet since i just put in the tank while waiting for the tank to cycle instead of paying 7-8$ per pound to locally anytime. I'm going to be putting corals and stuff in there anyway. Whats in there now looks great to me and will look even better with the corals. Yes the rock I bought is supposed to be live not sure if it sat on a boat or not but the money/time trade off is worth it to me
