Default salinity adjustment

Would it be safe to adjust my salinity from 34 ppt to 32 ppt in a 10 % water change to bring it down alittle from 1.027 sg.

Thanks in advance

That shouldn't be a problem. Just be sure that you've first added back for evaporation before doing the water change.

Adjusting salinity down is usually not an issue for fish, but corals are pickier. Fish can handle going from a salinity of 1.025 down to 1.010 within a day in order to treat ich using hyposalinity treatment. Raising salinity too quickly is what usually causes problems. Corals are a little pickier. Most softies and LPS corals should be fine with a 0.002 drop during a water change, but some SPS corals may retract or even die. I never try to adjust my salinity more than 0.001 during any single water change. You need to remember that your new water being used for your water change may have different levels of pH, calcium, alk, temp, etc... and adding a 0.002 SG adjustment on top of that may be too much for some corals.

Very well spoken

A good way to lower the salinty slowly would be to do a drip into a 5-gallon pail, as your level goes down, just top-off with fresh ro/di water...

I've done it like this a few times now and not only is it simple, but it does it slowly..

Follow the same process as if you were to drip acclimate a fish/coral/clam....

So in theory, if you took out 5 gallons of saltwater you would replace it with 5 gallons of RO/DI? I also have a higher salinity than I should have. The good news is that I've been wicked slow about setting this 75 gallon bad boy up and only have a Lawn Mower Blenny, a few crabs, a big snail and a pepermint shrimp. I will need to reel in my salinity before I can do anything else. I'm patient but dripping in water is NOT on my list of things to do.

NEVER put in straight fresh water. make up a batch of salt water for however much you take out, You want to make it not quite as strong as it should be, if you are shooting for 1.022 and your at 1.025 then you should make the saltwater about 1.02 so that the higher and the lower balance to about 1.022.

if you put just straight freshwater into the tank you are distilling 5 gallons of saltwater from 1.0X to half of what it once was.

My number is at 1.027 right now and from what I gather it needs to be right around 1.025 I just did a 50% water change and the number didn't change as we had hoped, we did mix the water slightly lower than it should've been.

Yes, you can take out some saltwater and add pure RO water. Just be careful how much you take out and replace. Try to lower your salinity by a max of .001 at a time. Removing 4% of your water volume (NOT TANK VOLUME) and replacing it with RO water will give you the .001 drop

1.027SG * 96% + 1.000SG * 4% = 1.026 SG

Making up a weak batch of saltwater and doing a water change is a better way of doing it since you should be doing a minimum 10% water change every 2-4 weeks anyway. A SG of 1.017 for a 10% water change will lower your SG by .001

1.027SG * 90% + 1.017SG * 10% = 1.026 SG

Then doing another 10% water change a few days later will lower the SG down to 1.025
