Default Live rock

I was just wondering what would be a good ratio of LR to seeder rock....obviously i want as much LR as i can get but LR gets expensive ya know so I want to balance out the cost with some seeder rock, I was actually thinking about a 50/50 mix.

Just found this site through another thread Live Rock has a nice pricing chart and they give you hitchhickers too From what I have read so far is either 1 lb of LR per gallor or up to 2 lbs of LR per gallon. All up to you.

Thanks for the site, actually has decent prices. Although I wasn't asking for how much LR to put in my tank I was asking about the ratio of base rock to live rock. IE if I put 30 lbs total of rock in my tank how much should be live rock and how much should be base rock.

All you need is just a couple of nice sized pieces of LR to seed your base/non-live rock. The other rock will become full blown LR within about 6 months. During that initial 6 month process, you'd want to make sure that you don't add a bunch of fish that thrive off of eating microorganisms/copods/amphiods/etc... To speed up the time frame, use more LR. A 50/50 mix is a good ratio is you have the money. Use less if you have some patience.

Do keep in mind though that each piece of LR may have their own unique critters/coralline/sponges on them. The more LR you get, the better variety you will probably end up having in your tank. Most of the hitchhikers will be good, but you may also get some bad hitchhikers as well.

My husband and I made base rock and it was only about $.35 per pound. Now that it has been in there a while, we can't tell it from the live we originally put in there. If you want the recipe, let me know!
