Who is all new to saltwater? Anybody just thinking about starting a saltwater tank? Anyone "on the fence" about deciding to make the plunge?

I'm new too. I've been researching systems etc. I'm pretty sure I want to start but not sure what the best aquarium is going to be. I visited a store yesterday and they were pushing the newest Oceanic 45 gallon cube for about $500 plus stand for the same. I've read that rectangular tanks are better and allow for more fish (even though I know that I can't have lots of fish in a reef tank). Anyone have any suggestions on which aquariums are the best? What's a good size for a beginner?

Nice to have somebody to grow up with. I have not made store visits yet since I know almost zilch on salt water aquariums.

try to find chemy clean at the local aquatic store its a powder wth a very small scoop one scoop of this per month i think will get rid of the red slimy looking alge your filters are not the cause of the red algea it may be to much sun light through a window or just in the water and spreading

Hello! I'm relatively new (I feel like I'm new) to saltwater systems. I have a 90 gal. tan ste up with fish and some surviving coral. I have 2-96 watt compacts and 2-175 wat 10k mhs. I have an under cabinet sump with a uvand euro skimmer in it. I have a Rio2100 for a pump and a power head in the tank for circulation. It seems that I have to do water changes every month to keep the tank clean.
Problem:
1. I CAN'T KEEP SOFT OR HARD CORAL ALIVE !!
2. I do not know if the current flow inside the tank is stronge enough. What is to low of a flow.
3. I can't seem to keep red algea out of the tank. (i have turbo snails, crabs and shrimp in the tank)

any ideas?? ps-I'm close to broke now

I've had a ten gallon freshwater tank for a few months now and loved it so much that I've gotten a 29 gallon tank for Christmas. It's a tropical fish setup you find at the pet stores, but I'm considering using it for saltwater. I haven't done any research yet, as this is the first stop on my quest to learn more about saltwater setups.

We are new to aquariums and just finished the set up cycle for our 60 gal retangular acrylic saltwater tank. We bought our first fish yesterday. Already a little worried because of the 3 we bought, two are being very shy and not coming out at all. We got a clown fish....he is doing great; a blue tang "hippo tang" and she is staying in the back of the reef, actually lying kind of flat under a rock area on her side; and then we also got one called a scissor tail goby. He is hanging very closely with the tang, out of site, but not on his side. (I only made reference to sex because the clown is named Nemo and the tang Dorrey, after the movie characters.) The clown has eaten some and is swimming all around, but the tang and the goby have not come out of hiding. I just checked with the owner of the shop and he said the tangs are commonly like this until they get used to their aquarium. He said it is not laying on its side in a sick way, but just getting as far away from us as possible and to hide under the rock, she has to kind of be on her side. He said it may be 2-3 days before she starts eating and 2-3 weeks before she becomes more social and lets us see her. I sure hope that is the case. It's such a beautiful fish and we were hoping to be admiring it by now. Anyhow, I am so glad we found this site so we can learn from all of you who have been doing this for awhile.

Bev

I am just starting with saltwater. A friend has had a saltwater tank for several years, but I have not taken the plunge. She had a rocky start for the first year or so with her saltwater setup, so I am a little leery. I am hoping to learn from this forum, and from her experience. I love the vibrant colors of the saltwater fish, and they seem to have more personality.

Hi reefbuilders!

I'm new to saltwater too. I've been researching for the past month but I haven't made my decision yet. My brother left an old tank here at our house and I'll see if I can use it.
