Default Canister Filt water level

I have been told that a canister filter works with the use of gravity T or F ? If I place a Canister filter next too( on the same stand ) will it still give me the same Flow and would it take the place of 1 of 2 emperor 400.

What type of tank do you have - Reef or FO? IMO, don't use a canister or power filters on a reef. You'll get your filtration from LR/LS & the use of protein skimmer.
