Default Tank Cycle

I have a fairly new tank, about 6 weeks now. I have read and heard about the cycle. Can someone explain this cycle to me. How long does it take to cycle, does this cycle just happen one time, how do I know when my tank has actually cycled and so forth. Thanks in advance to the information.

cycling a tank can take between 3-7 weeks i do believe it will actually happen a few times AFTER the first. the first always takes the longest. The best way to see if your tank is ready is to test. Buy a test kit. Testing is your friend. Many can attest to the fact that I am a testing nut. When i KNOW my tank is cycling I test twice a day, when I am not sure I test every 2 days. I like to know what is going on in my tank.

And your welcome in the aftermath of the answer.

cycling is the process of when bacteria is new and jsut starting to grow so you have to add some dead material that will change to ammonia and then the bacteria will change it into nitrate. You are cycling when you see a spike in you nitrates and nitrites. or when you add new live rock or live sand.
