Default Water Temp Question

I have a new set-up (two weeks old) and my water temp stays between 90.5 and 93. I have lowered the heater to 76 but the temp is not changing. I do have a wood tank canopy, should i attach the light (Aqualight PC 48" 2-65 Watt Single) to the canopy instead of keeping it on the glass tank top??

Thanks!

If you live in the southern US then you might want to look at getting a chiller if you don't you might wanna look at turning off your heater for a while and let your tank cool down. maybe turn on your house A/C. If nothing else take the hood off and move the light and add some fans.

Have you checked your heater to make sure it is not malfunctioning or that you thermometer is correct. I've seen a few heaters go bad through the years. I agree that you should lose the glass tops.

If you don't already I would look into putting some cooling fans in the canopy. Living in florida myself I only run the heater at night my power heads and lights keep my water at the right temp during the day.

A couple of posts ago I suggested egg crate, as far as I know no one has tried it since my post but I think it would be a great improvement to the water temp. You can find it in most hardware stores i think.

Have you checked your thermometer? It's not uncommon to have a bad one. Agree with above posts - ditch the cover & get a small fan blowing across the top. Could also cut back on how long you have the lights on.

Since your tank is only two weeks old, you shouldn't have any corals in it. I'd leave the lights off for a couple days and see what temp your tank drops to. If your tank's temp drops, then you know that the lighting is adding to the problem. If the temp doesn't drop, then you know that the temp issue is either because of your heater or room temp. To see if it is your heater, keep an eye out for if the light on the heater keeps turning on. If it does then you know that the heater is causing so, if not all, of your temp problems. The other way is to unplug your heater and see if your tank's temp drops. You'll figure out which one is causing the problems through trial and error.

BTW - Never trust what the temp setting on your heater is set at. They are usually off. I like to use a floating glass thermometer to get an accurate tank temp reading and adjust the heater based upon that. I also use a stick-on-glass temp gauge to use as a quick check for my tank's temp. During the summer, the stick on gauge is usually a degree higher than the actual water and during the winter is will read a degree cooler than the water.
