Default fluval 405/replacing filter media possible?

hey every1, I have a fluval405 canister filter along with a remora pro protein skimmer, 2 maxi jets for a 100 gallon tank. I had a ? about my fluval, can I replace the carbon media with anything that doesn't break down as fast or need to be replaced as much? thanks

I would get rid of the canister filter all together if you are keeping a reef tank. They are known for becoming nitrate factories if not cleaned on a very regular basis.

Convert the canister filter into a live sand/live rock holster. You could probably also store filter floss in it to continue having it mechanically filter your tank along with biologically filtering your tank.

Google for some modifications.

With a 100 gal tank I'd have a sump. You can put your skimmer & heater there as well as have a refugium. I have a 30 gal that I've had running for over 5 years with nothing more than a protein skimmer & a couple of powerheads. Check out Melevsreef.com - Welcome! if you're not sure about sumps.
