Cyanobacteria is fueled by excessive photo-periods, excessive nutrients, and low flow.

Changing any of theses can have a negative impact on your cyanobacteria. That being said, the most common treatment is increasing your flow over the area that is in trouble. A second is regular water changes. Do 5 - 10% more than you normally do for a few weeks. This will remove more nutrients and feed less algae. You'll see a reduction.

Lastly, you can turn off your lights, but in a reef tank that could spell trouble for your corals. This option is really only viable if you're doing a fish-only system and are prepared to spend a few days without seeing your fish.

Physically siphoning out the cyano helps too, but isnt a permanent fix.

I think letting the tank go for a day or two with no lights would be fine, it shouldnt bother your corals. After all, there are plenty of cloudy days on the reef.

Good luck!!!!

Jim,
Never used it myself but I think I've read where it may cause havouc with your skimmer so keep an eye on it when you start using it. It's basically a short term band-aid.

I'm reading the product box. You will need to turn off your skimmer for 48 hours. UV sterilizers and ozonizer...or anything that is carbon filtrartion must be off for 24 hours after you start the treatment. And don't eat it! It says repeat once a month to keep tank clear.

Obviously, we have tried this before and will be doing it again. My husband's tank had an outbreak while we were on vacation.
