| New to the Hobby (Getting Started/Setting Up) Think you can upgrade to saltwater? Your probably very confused, but remember ask questions and you'll get your answers on here! |

 Cycling New Setup I have just started (literally 24 hrs ago) a saltwater aquarium in 55 gal tank with 25 lbs of live rock & 3 inch live sand bed. I noticed that when testing the water today that everything seems to perfect. Ammonia -0 Nitrate - 20 Nitrite - .50 Buffer capacity - 120 pH - 7.2 Has the tank not started to cycle yet? Also how do you know if there is any die off on the live rock?  |

| Your levels are nowhere near perfect (not being rude). Ammonia should be 0, nitrite 0, nitrate - below 10. Your alkalinity (buffer capacity) should be somewhere between 70 and 110 and your pH should be between 8.0 and 8.4. I doubt your tank has even started to cycle yet, those chemicals probably came over from the live rock/sand. Die off will give a somewhat rotten smell to the water and you'll most likely be able to see it. Good luck with it....ask questions! We're happy to help! |
