| How high is your Ca and dkh? SG? Can you test for magneseum? What temp does your tank normally run. Dont panic about the Ph just yet. 7.9 is not that low but you will want to bring it up. Here is a good read for PH. Chemistry and the Aquarium |

| my alk is really high!! I will stop buffering and start doing water changes then. I have a 55 gallon tank, how mush should I take out? The article was really helpful but I am still not sure what whe problem is. I opened the door for a wahile (I live in Las Vegas so I did not leave it open for too long). |

| Crossan, What type of substrate are you using? Also, are you dosing Kalwasser at night after lights out? If your DKH and calcium are high but your PH is not then you can most often trace the problem back to there being too much CO2 in the aquarium. Remember PH is a measure of the hydrogen ion. How much bioload is in your tank? Do you have a refugium which is full of caulerpa? Remember when the tank lights go out ALL photosynthesis stops in the tank. This causes the dissolved oxygen content to drop as the corals, algae, etc "respire" and release the CO2 which combines to form carbonic acid (H2CO3) and this lowers PH. Make sure you have some real good surface aggitation for the next few days to facilitate gas exchange and I bet your PH will climb to 8.1 or better. Peace brother Think of it this way - Lights on = everything breathes in - lights off = everything breathes out.
