What are your tank parameters? How often do you do water changes? And how much of a water change?

If you just started your tank up, this is normal. It's called cycling and we all have gone thru waves of cyno here and there. How long has this tank been up and running?

the tank has been cycled for about 4months. i have a small sail fin tang, a clown fish, a royal gramma, a fire shrimp, brittle star, 5 hermit crabs,4 turbo snails, 2 tube worms, a small leather, and a small frog spawn. i have not had any problems with algae or cyno untill now.

Having a tank for so short of time, this is perfectly normal, you won't get a mature tank until your tank is about one year old and even then its considered young. You will get cyno outbreaks every now and then.

However, having a Different Water Source, over feeding, longer light hours, under skimming can contribute to this problem.

sorry i don't think cynobacteria is usual after months of cycling, how much live rock do you have in you system?? your nitrate would also play a role in cyno break out along with PO4, are you using an RO machine for top ups at all??

the question you need to ask is whats causing my nitrates to be so high?? once you can solve that then you'd be on the way to solving your nitarte problem!!!

Hello Major926
How much flow do you have in your tank?
If your finding that the cyno is in patches these could be dead spots where there's no flow and your getting a build up of detritus in these spots. If this is the case add a couple more powerheads and get some better flow around the tank.
If you find this is not the problem cut down on feeding (as the others are saying),say feed every other day and be patient and keep up with the water changes and get that nitrate down.
You will crack it but can take a while
Also try to keep your hands out the tank..
Good luck and keep us updated
