Default Return Pipe Dimension

OK, here is a good one (I think). LFS (where I bought my tank) gave me the connecting PVC pieces for the return pipe and the drain corner-flo kit of my 90 gallon Perfecto tank. I glue them in as directed and they came out really nice. Well, the return pipe connector LFS gave me is 1/2". Should't it be 3/4"? I think if I hook up the rest of the return pipe system using 1/2" piping, the pump will not be as effective as it should be. Should I keep that return pipe connection as is and make the rest of the return pipe 1/2"? Of should I make the rest of the piping 3/4" and keep the connection at 1/2"?

Depends on your return pump really..

My 90 gallon tank uses a mag 9.5 return which is 3/4" pvc

my 37 gallon tank uses a mag 7 reuturn which is 1/2" pvc

What return pump are you using ?

RIO 3100. The output is 3/4" O.D. the I.D. is the same as the 1/2" connector. Kind of weird IMO. Even if I make the rest of the piping 3/4", can I keep the 1/2" connector which is only 3" total?

What does yours look like? You got a pic of the bottom of your 90 gallon tank?

Yeah I can take one for ya tommorow (hopefully I remember)

basically it goes like this...

my return pump then 3/4" to 1" adapter then a 1" swing check-valve back to 3/4" then 3/4" all the way up to a ballvalve before my bulkhead...

Very nice! Thanks for taking the pictures. Now I can copy your set up . I actually ended up going to the LFS and getting a new bulkhead. I explained to the guy the issue and he said it wasn't going to affect my flow. I proceeded to inform him that there would be a decrease of over 170 gph decrease. He says, "At what height!" as if I didn't know what I was talking about. So he got me a new bulkhead. I'm calling this a $15 learning mistake. Somebody on a forum (may have been this one) said the following about LFS, " Trust but verify." Well I verified too late. Lesson learned (I hope ).

Thanks again. I'll be sure to post pics of the progress in a new thread (soon).
