in the reef set up guide on this site it says lights off for the first week. is this necessary and what are the advantages?

You can leave them on if you want...it won't do much harm except a little algae.

I mean the only real advantages I could see are helping coralline grow...but since you probably won't be dosing with calcium it won't matter.
