Taz, do you have anything in your tank besides LR now? If not, you can buy LR anywhere and you can cure it in your tank. If you get LR online, it doesn't matter if it's cured or not because you will have die-off that will cause your water parameters to spike, which will harm your fish, if any. Your best bet is to buy cured LR from your LFS if you have any specimens in your tank now.
I got my LR from Marine Aquarium - Live Rock - Corals - Tonga - Fiji - Vanuatu - Marshall Islands. I bought 115 lbs for $389 plus shipping ($60) to the air cargo terminal at the airport. My LR came with feather dusters, lots and lots of coraline algae. My tank was new and I cured it in the tank. It took about 2 weeks. The rock was in very good shape.

You need to be hesitant about the mini cycles that follow once you add more LR...perhaps only adding a couple lbs of cured live rock at a time would be your best bet.

Anemones need perfect water conditions and an established tank

you can cure live rock in a tub of salt water and transfer it safely to the dt.An air stone and a small pump is all you need.

He wont need a skimmer to cure a few pieces of rock. But water changes are a good idea.

hey lynnvangsnes,

Just curious how bad the smell was from that much live rock curing in the tank? I am thinking of doing similarly with about 180-200 lbs of it. But is it going to smell us out of house and home? Just curious.

Anyone else done the cure in the tank method?

I got some amazing rock from Walt smith on eaby and it is amazing. I got a 100 lbs for 270 shipped and It was cured. I had to cure it again because there was some die off but not much. It is pretty amazing rock though

Im curing in the tank right now. If your rock is fresh it will be fine. It should smell like a day at the beach. I didnt even start using my skimmer until a week later. PM if you want more details

yeh, i wanna see this.. I'm actually interested in making my own LR eventually.. There are some pretty neat articles on the internet about how to properly create and cure and such, the problem is with some crete you get real high PH and it needs quite a while to cure in fresh before you even think about salt.. but in the long run it will save a ton of cash.

You know if you get Biospyra your cycle will be 2-3 days...or you can keep checking your levels and your cycle may not be even 4 weeks.

ive noticed all my levels flat even with a clown and a cleanup crew, i have had the tank for about 3 weeks.. i had a small amonia spike after the clown but everything is flat.. all readings are fine. Should I be waiting on something else to happen or should I be okay?

Be hesitant to add anything more just yet. And BioSpira is natural.
''Bio-Spira™ (from Marineland) contains the actual living bacteria responsible for nitrification in an established tank''

It kinda works like a diabetes scale. You want thing to be flate after awhile. In most cases after a spike you see some sort of a drop this is generally because people try fixing it unaturally and over do it. If your flatelined and nothing is going up or down I think you should be ok IMO
