Default MH lighting, Help, ready to purchase, price is right.

eBay: 60" 1072W Metal Halide Aquarium Light New (item 130131971103 end time Jul-15-07 21:38:40 PDT)

If anyone can please review this MH light for me,

Couple of questions, Is there a such thing as too much light? This unit is 1072 watt, also my tank measures 60 x 18> this MH light unit is 60 x 12> I assume the 12 doesnt matter as unit rest in the middle of my 60 x 18? am I correct on this??

Any quick help would be appreciated, How do these things sit on the tank? do they lock in?

This is 200 beans below units i was looking at, I would love to pull the trigger and make a purchase...

Thanks..

Just when I thought I had seen or read about evry light fixture in the world you come long with this thing.Never heard of it.I dont know what size your tank is but the general rule is 6 watts per gallon. If your tank is a 115 then you would be at 9+ watts per gallon.Without the addition of a lot of fans and a chiiler you might be making fish soup.

Tank is 120 gallon, I cant beat this light especially for the price, 9 Watts per gallon, seems high but very doable..

Buy it!!! for the money this cannot be beat, I have compared to store units and this is identical, yet 500 - 750 beans on the cheap..\

Unit is made by Odyssey, I assume a china knock off brand?

Anyway there is a switch for everything, 3 ballast for the MH, My unit has 7 fans (also has a power switch) so heat from the MH after 5 days doesnt seem to be a issue. The ballast doesnt run too hot, hot to the touch but i believe thats normal.

true actinic lights also have 2 power switches (front/back), and the 8 LED lights are just breathtaking again with a power switch...

The posts that hold the unit are solid, I cant see this ever being a issue..

Looking for good timers now to setup a 24 hour light cycle, should be easy as this unit is all in one every light with a power cord..

Now that the MH lights have burnt in the light is crisp, I would deff advise checking this unit out, I'm close friends with my LFS owner, he seems to be very impressed with this unit, I first told him it was 700 bucks, later saying 550 shipped, he simply said nice!!

Now I have no clue how this will stand the test of time but I dont care, this is a mean unit so far..If it fails I could buy another cheap one or pony up for a Name Brand..

If your order from the fella I did, shipping was quick and unit was very well packaged, tracking # provided..Ebay seller Id hombby

I would make this purchase again in a heartbeat,

I dont think it would be a issue, 13 watts per gallon sounds like alot but honestly after seeing my 10 watts per gallon in action, no issue, corals with thrive i'm sure of it...

Not sure the unit your looking at but you could setup a cycle, I'm going to have my middle MH light kick in for 3 maybe 4 hours during afternoon for a true peak sunlight effect.

Guess thats not a option for 2 MH lights, but you could cycle the Actincs off etc, but i'm from the school the more watts the better now..

i have an odyssey hood also, there is a thread over on reefcentral.com under lighting about them. you need to take a look at it, (odyssey light .. electronic ballast) something like that. the mh ballast are underpowered but they can be replaced with other ballast for still cheaper than any other hood. if you are unhappy with the output of the light. has many other mods that people are doing with them also. i replaced my ballast and have been pleased with the unit.

the tread is (odyssea MH fixture review...new electronic version) under lighting equipment section, depending on when someone has posted on it it can be a number of pages back into lighting. extremely long thread all the info you could want on this light fixture

I am completely at a loss for words, but I dont mind saying.I am sure glad that I didnt buy an inexpensive light fixture because the price is right and find out its so powerful it will bleach corals in the bottom of the tank. And then find out its under powered and needs a new ballast from day 1.Remeber under powered bulbs burn out a lot faster.

I dont have any problems with it bleaching out any corals (no i wouldnt put low light corals in direct light of fixture), and the fixture is still a lot cheaper after replacing the ballast than others comparable. also if your happy with the light to start with you dont need to replace the ballast, yes underpowered bulbs burn out faster but at the price you pay you can replace a lot of bulbs, and it leaves you room to upgrade the fixture in the future if your on a limited budget.

so, then im guessing 720w fixture is too much for my 55.

what if i get 2 fixtures that are each 260watt? my only concern is if they will all fit on my tank.

729 watts over a 55 is a shade over 13 watts Thats still more than double the 6 wpg. 520 watts over a 55 is over 9.MarLgtgAnthony heres a good read for you.

That was a good read. Too bad it was written before the use of t5 in aquarium use.

That is so old they thought mh bulbs would last tewo years back then. But one thing that didnt change is what happens to corals with to much or to little light. They die either way.We all know that 5 to 6 watts per gallon is a level most corals can live with. Its at 6 wpg that I suspect the deep water corals start getting just a little uncomfortable.I guess the real point is,If most corals will survive and grow at 6 wpg, what use is 7 wpg?Follow that logic for two more wpg and what happens?
