Default Extra filter in tank while cycling hurtful?

I have the standard activated charcoal filter in my tank while it is cycling. I wanted to know ( and sorry I am full of questions) If I could just drop another filter of the same type in preperation of another tank used for possible QT or another tank for that matter. Will it slow my cycle at all? I put the filter in the return reservior is this okay?

An activated carbon filter does not have to be cycled. I would just use the one, as too much carbon filtering can remove nutrients.

I actually think that activated carbon filters would be bad for saltwater in general. As the activation process uses phosphate and that is bad for the tank and will leach back out of the carbon.

there are lots of activated carbons on the market that dont have phosphates. But to be safe all you have to do is mix some in water and let it set for a while and then test for it,you should already have a phosphate test kit.Generally if the label says no phosphates its ok. But test it anyway.

K, It came with the Biocube, and I bought a set of 2 in a pack just for the Biocube, I'll look on the label and get back to you. And yes I have a kit to test Phosphates so I'll definatley look into that as well.

Thanks
