Default 75G Crashed.. Nano Time/Question please!

HI,

I have a question for everyone, hopefully someone can help me out. I had a 75G reef for 7 years. Well, last week I came home and everything was GONE! DEAD!
I think a toxin might have gotten in?? Everything was fine in the am (6 hrs earleir) when I turned the lights on in the am. OR the heater cracked and fried everything?? I was and am Pi$$ed!

ANYWHO:
I had to empty everything even my corals that were still alive! UGH! All my live rock I had to throw in the woods next to my home. I had no choice...

WELL, I bought a 12 G aquapod a few days ago... I bought a few pieces of live rock with tons of corraline on them BUT then I thought maybe I can save the old live rock that I had thrown away.

I just retreived it and scrubbed it down and put it into a rubbermaid with salt water and 2 powerheads. I will do a 100% water change 2x a week for a couple weeks. Then I think I can reuse it for foundation rock...???

Does anyone think I can do this?? AND am I doing it right?
HELP advise suggestions PLEASE!
Thanks, Kim

im sorry for your loss. as far as using you rock again, i dont see any reason why you wouldnt be able to use it. the only concern i would have is maybe some toxin or something like that is in the rock and will now be releaced back into your tank. unlikely as it is, i would think about that!! good luck and hopefully nothing goes wrong!! again im sorry for your loss

HI everyone,
Thanks for the replies. Yes the heater was cracked and the power strip was black like it shorted out. ..

Ya, probably right, wishful thinking about my rock/ -(

I am setting up a 12G aquapod. nano reef . I always wanted one so I guess I deserve it now!

I suppose LR for my nano reef wont be all that much. I lost 200 lbs of Lr last week!

I will post pics when im up and running/ cycled.. now for the wait....lalalalala

I am getting a black percula for my nano though

I would love to see pics of your tanks too. anyone have a nano to share too??
Thanks a bunch, Kim

would it be possible to boil the rock to make sure that you get everything out? i don't know if it would work, its just an idea.

The best idea would be just to buy new rock..it's only 12 pounds and trouble saving

Im really sorry to hear about your tank but I want to commend you for a great attitude.
I dont think most people would react the same way you are.

As for the rock, I dont know for sure but if you wanted to give it a try, get a rubbermaid tub, throw your rock in it with some saltwater and a powerhead and test it for a few weeks.
It will probably cycle again cause Im sure you are going to have some die off. If after a few weeks all is good, throw 15lbs of it in that new Nano your getting. If it looks good after a couple more weeks (Keep testing) Id say put something in there. If it all works out you will have 180 lbs or so of live rock you can sell that will go a long way towards stocking that killer Nano you are going to have! It will just take a little time.

You can keep the rock, cant use it at this point, but save it and let it dry, then down the road re-cure the rock in a tub, or just re-cure it in a tub now... 200 lbs of rock is worth a pretty penny !!!

Sorry about the loss, that is horrible

Keep your head up, the nano tanks are nice and are very fun, I have a 24 gallon aquapod myself

Thanks so much for all your comments and suggestions. The rock was in the woods for about a week and a half. It has completely dried off and been rained on. lol about 90 degrees here during the day.

I DID go grab it and scrubbed it down in the sink in HOT water then I put it in a rubbermaid with salt water and 2 powetrheads. (just in case) I have about 100 lbs left. A guy came over to buy my old canopy and stand for my 75 and he took some. I was SO MAD STILL! Yes, very awful, saddening and maddening BUT had to look on the bright side =:/

I think I will Just buy new rock and cure this rock for about 3 week or more and keep checking the water and then sell it?? The old pieces are BIG too cuz it was in my 75!

Keep your head up, the nano tanks are nice and are very fun, I have a 24 gallon aquapod myself

Ya, I am gonna have fun with my new aquapod! I always wanted one anyway. I'm thinking that because everything is self contained in the aquapod the maintenance will be easier. =) I always loved my coral in my 75 more than the fish (loved my fish too though) lol I always wated a black percula SO... I'll get one for my nano.
