I have heard that it can scratch the undersides of our critters and takes forever to become "live"

I have had good luck with it but would rather take it out and replace with sand. I will definately be doing sand on the 60.

Yes, before everything gets established and filled up with goodies and you realize later how you now want to change it and how much stress that might put on everything. Besides, when I do the water changes, I do a vacuum. When I vacuum, I am sure in addition to my six-line, I have decimated the copopod population. Much easier to get a diamond goby and more fun to watch. Also more surface area for bacteria in sand.

If not, get that crap out of your tank.
My husband put that crap in his tank and I have to maintain it twice a week because it traps so much crap that I get cyano. Plus, sand looks much better. It is easier on your burrowing critters and sifters.

It makes several references to grain size maybe not crushed coral but the smaller the better to a point (dust size would not be good)The whole point being that small grains of sand have have more surface area for critters to live on and feed from than large grains or crushed coral. And small grain size prevents stuff from flowing thru it like ditritus.

I am having problems posting anything over 2-3 sentences. This happens to me way to often and is ticking me off!
It was a good article and it sufficiently answered any question I might have! Thanks NATIVE VA MAN!!!!

This is what the lfs calls crushed coral.

In the tank...

So am I in the clear?

I would say that if individual grains are descernable in a pic they are too large. Most of the articles I have read recomend sugar fine sand.

The large chunks seen in the main tank picture are not actually sand they are bits and pieces of dead stuff from my live rock. Not sand or coral

My husband's crushed coral is a lot larger in size...which is what I thought you were talking about.
