Default Keeping Saltwater handy vs. freshly mixed

I just did a little research on quarentine tanks, I think i will be setting up one to be sure not to destroy my hard work. I didnt find anything about lighting for a 10 gal. which light would suffice? Also incase of an emergency water change how much should one have hanging around in a sealed bag bucket or trashcan? How long does saltwater last once you mix it? What can you keep it in, incase of an emergency water change?

I usually keep about 2-3 water changes worth of R/O water around at all times. I usually mix one water change worth of saltwater on Saturday morning, keep it in the warm garage to warm it up and do the water change on Sunday night. In case of 'emergency water changes', I wouldn't hesitate to mix it up and put it in the tank within 30 or 45 minutes as long as the temp and salinity are where they're supposed to be.

i agree. i would also keep the mixed saltwater airated with air stones or have a power head in there. if the water sits all the salt settles on the bottom and does nothing for you, and then you turn your tank into a big vat of milk. good times

Kevin,
For lighting the QT tank all you need is a simple strip light.

I have had to do one emergency water change...but not in the QT. Really, the only emergency water changes that I can foresee in that tank is if you over medicate. I tend to half dose on meds unless it is super serious, usually it isn't. I am bad. I tend to premix in a bucket, toss in a heater and an airstone and then mess with changes 24-48 hours later (I live in the desert, so keeping my water in the garage just won't work, I'd have more evaporation than it is worth). Read the med bottles closely. In a fix, in the QT tank, I would not hesitate to cut out the 24 hour period and just dump saltwater on the fly. I'll probably get a few nasty PMs.

Glampka,

A strip light as in full spectrum? Any specific ones you would use? And thanks for the fast replies all!

I forgot about the lightling. Really, you just need basic lighting, nothing fancy. If you go out and buy a 10 gallon set up with everything with it, the lighting from that is fine...but not the undergravel filter!

Like Becky said just a basic light. Fish don't care.
