Default coral purchase question

I broke down and bought a critter for my tank, earlier than I was hoping but I gave in. My water has been stable and zero'd out for almost 2 weeks. I came home with a rock with polyps on it.

My question is, do I have to just put the whole rock that the polyps are attached to in the tank or can I somehow remove them from that rock and arrange them on the rock already in my tank?? I don't mind keeping this rock because it's pretty small (fairly round bigger than a golfball but smaller than a tennisball) and it's almost completely covered in dark purple coraline. I found a spot for this rock, but I'm worried about future coral purchases. It's only a 12 gal tank and I bought 20# live rock to begin with. If I'm going to be adding rock each time I add a new coral, I'm really going to be hurting for room! I guess I could remove some of the rock that I bought but I'm not looking to re-aquascape each time I buy something.

I would just leave them on the rock they came with. You could try to move them to other rocks but then you have the possibility they will die or not take to the rock you put them on.
