Default surface aggitation

What are everyone's thoughts on this? The only thing I have moving water on the surface is my skimmer, it doesn't seem to cause much disturbance on the surface.

I like to have some surface agitation. Mine comes from the Hydor Koralia flow deflector I have an a ph. The agitation helps to break up surface slime & with gas exchange.

I like alot of surface agitation, especially with the metal halides, the shimmer is amazing

Its also good to keep the slime off the surface and gas exchange as Gary mentioned...

I have basically gone with bottom agitation pushing the water to the surface to some extent. My overflow return is the only surface agitation that I have going. Seems to be enough.

It is important to keep the water moving on the top of the tank but I wouldn't say turbulant. Keeping the flow going through the overflow at a good rate is key. Although I agree the shimmer under the halides is awesome. As long as when you look up through the glass to the waterline the water looks like a mirror bright and shinny your moving enough water at the top of yur tank. If you see what looks like spit floating up there you need more flow.
